Authorities say that good Samaritans have rescued a newborn baby from a dumpster in Northern California under scorching heat.

According to the authorities, the baby was found wrapped in a plastic bag shortly before midday Tuesday in the city of Stockton, south of Sacramento.

A resident of the apartment heard screams and informed the manager, who took the child out of the dumpster.

The boy was taken to the hospital. The police say he's fine.

The police found the mother of the 15-year-old baby nearby and took her to the hospital. Police say she could face charges of child abuse and endangerment.

It is unknown how long the child has been in the dumpster. Temperatures in the region have exceeded 100 degrees.

The police also note that California law allows newborns to be anonymously left in hospitals or fire stations.
