News briefs: the art exhibition has a successful weekend; Local students are semi-finalists of the National Merit

The North Shore Art League’s annual jury exhibit, Art in the Village, returned to Hubbard Woods Park in Winnetka on September 11-12.

The exhibit featured artists from across the country and a variety of mediums, including oil paintings, photographs, sculptures and more, according to a press release from the league.

Peggy Feliot Jensen, of Erie, Colo., Took home the show’s top prize, while second place went to David Zahn, of Moline; third to Jane Frey, of Elk Grove Village; and honorable mention to Sally Brandl of Chicago; Brian Eppley, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and Joe Ruck, of Rolling Meadows.

“I was honored to be the judge of this talented group of artists. It was difficult to pick just a few winners out of so many trustworthy applicants, ”Nina Weiss, professional landscape artist and educator, said in the statement.

New this year, Lisa DePinto, a league portrait painter, created oil paintings on location.

A silent auction featured works by artists from the show, and the proceeds went to league programming, the statement said.

“What an incredible weekend,” NSAL Executive Director Linda Nelson said in the statement. “More than 3,000 art lovers attended the exhibition. The weather was beautiful, the crowds were happy, the artists were delighted and the board, staff and volunteers were very grateful.

The semi-finalists of the National Merit of the New Trier high school.

Twenty-one students from New Trier High School and six students from Loyola Academy have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition, according to information from local high schools.

About 16,000, or less than 1% of the country’s high school students, have achieved the title and have a chance of winning one of the 7,500 national scholarships.

The New Trèves 2022 National Merit semi-finalists are: Madeleine N. Arend, Timofei D. Asinski, Sarah A. Bewley, Yinghui Bimai, Aruni Chenxi, Nika Chuzhoy, TJ Dale, Stefan M. Gjaja, Isabel C. Hernandez, Patrick A. Jamieson, Connor F. Lane, Taeyoung Lee, Bennett A. Lindberg, Abigail E. Miller, William B. Nelson, Luke C. Schuette, Beccan W. Simon, James V. Slone, Aidia M. Steen, Brendan T. Warshauer, and Ryan N. Wu.

Loyola’s semi-finalists are: Morgan C. baskfield,Matthew J. Griesmeyer,Mark Gabriel C. Gonzalez,John P. Phillips,Amanda M. RajkovichandPeter D. Scheidt.
