Updates on San José City Services and / or Operations

  • Proof of vaccination required during events at city facilities: San José City Council voted unanimously to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for attendees of events of 50 or more people in city-owned buildings yesterday August 24 City Council. The requirement does not apply to those under 12 who are not yet eligible for vaccination. A negative COVID-19 test result will not replace proof of vaccination. The new rules described in the project arrangement will remain in effect until its repeal or when the City ends its local emergency proclamation related to COVID-19.
  • Two help centers for evictions are now open: If you are having difficulty paying your rent,
    apply for rent assistance today. Don’t wait, the San José City Hall Eviction Assistance Center is now on the 12th floor. It is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A second Deportation Assistance Center is open at the Franklin-McKinley School District office, located at 645 Wool Creek Drive in San José. This location is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesdays from 1 to 8 p.m. California State Rent Aid and Santa Clara County Homelessness Prevention System.   • Get vaccinated and enjoy a movie: Join San José District 2 Council Member Sergio Jimenez on Monday, August 30, to get your shot, take part in free health and wellness resource-focused activities, and stay for an outdoor movie. The vaccination clinic, presented in partnership with AACI, will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Great Oaks Park, located at Snow and Giusti Drives in San José. The outdoor film, presented by the City’s Viva Parks program, will begin shortly after sunset.
  • Parking with a residential permit is resumed in phases: Last month, the City’s Department of Transportation announced the reintroduction of the Residential Parking Permit (PPR) program. We are gradually implementing RPP zones, starting with University and SUN zones in September. To provide more convenience to customers and create a more streamlined system for our parking staff, residential parking permits are now virtual. Federal government update

  • FDA Approves Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine: The United States Food and Drug Administration granted this week full approval of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for the treatment of COVID-19 disease in people 16 years of age and older. The vaccine also continues to be available under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for people aged 12 to 15 years and for administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised people. The vaccine will now be marketed under the name Comirnaty.

California State Update

  • Vaccine verification required for major events: The California Department of Public Health requires a vaccination check or negative test before entry when there are 5,000 or more people attending an indoor event. As of September 20, proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test will be required to indoor events with 1,000 or more, and self-attestation to verify a person’s immunization status will no longer be accepted.

Santa Clara County Updates

  • Isolation and Quarantine Services Available: Santa Clara County offers assistance options for people who have tested positive or have been in contact with someone positive for COVID-19. For help with food, bills, or a place to stay during isolation or quarantine, call 408-808-7770, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily to see what services are available. To start the process, callers must leave a voicemail message with their name, phone number and immediate needs in the language of their choice. All calls are returned within 24 hours.

    To be eligible, the applicant must live in Santa Clara County and the household income must be less than 80% of the region’s average income. For example, a family of four with an annual income of $ 117,750 will qualify.

  • Small Business Grants Available for COVID-19 Protective Measures: Santa Clara County and the Silicon Valley Small Business Development Center to provide grants of up to $ 5,000 to small businesses that have taken or plan to take action to protect their employees and customers from COVID -19. Applications are due September 7 for the first phase of the grant program which will total more than $ 500,000 in financial assistance. Eligible costs include:
    • Installation or upgrade of air circulation and filtration systems;
    • Protection shields at checkouts and contactless ordering or payment systems;
    • Hand sanitizer, hand washing stations and personal protective equipment for employees (eg, face covers, gloves, face shields);
    • Construction or operation of outdoor seating or service areas;
    • Time paid for employees to be tested or vaccinated; and
    • Other expenses to reduce the risk of transmission or exposure to COVID-19.

COVID-19 vaccines, testing, tracing and support services

  • Appointments available for testing this week: By appointment testing continues at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, with venues rotating by appointment only next week in San José, Gilroy, Milpitas and Mountain View. Walk-in tours continue to be accepted at permanent pop-up sites in Gilroy and San José.

    Appointments can be made from seven days before the test date until all slots are booked at www.sccfreetest.org. Meetings on the Fairgrounds site are now available five days in advance. Testing is free on all of these sites.

    County testing sites provide COVID-19 testing for free, regardless of immigration status, and no doctor’s note is required. For people without symptoms of COVID-19, the county currently offers indoor and driving sites. People with symptoms are referred to drive-thru sites to reduce the risk of making others sick.

    All health systems are required by the county ordinance to offer free testing to symptomatic people, people who have been exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19, and all essential workers. For more information on testing rights, see our Frequently Asked Questions.

    All test sites are mapped on the county website at www.sccfreetest.org. The site is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese and Tagalog. Information is also available by dialing 2-1-1.
