As part of Child Passenger Safety Week, the Santa Clara Police Department wants to make sure your child is in the correct child safety seat.
Child Passenger Safety Week runs from September 19 to 25 and aims to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of choosing, installing and using the right car seat.
California law requires a child to be properly restrained in a safety seat until they are at least 8 years old. Children 8 years and older, who are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, can sit in the back seat of a vehicle with a properly adjusted seat belt. Children under 2 years old must ride rearward facing or until they reach 40 pounds or 40 inches in height.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in children, and nearly half of car seats (46%) are misused.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has certified child safety technicians to help parents install car seats. Technicians will demonstrate the correct way to install the seat and determine the appropriate seat based on the age and size of the child. To search for cat seating programs in your county, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) has a drop-down menu on the OTS website. You can also contact your local CHP office to schedule a free safety seat inspection.
