Retired Jefferson County Teachers Receive Updates and Reports
WINTERSVILLE – The Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association met on September 14 at the Wintersville United Methodist Church under President Dave Nicholson as president.
Larry Coleman indicated that volunteer hours will be combined for 2020 and 2021. Barbara Pritts presented on “10 stimulating activities for retired teachers to complete.
Avis Henry reported on improvements to the Pleasant Hill School House Museum, its $ 20 Christmas Ornament Sale and Holiday Craft Show on November 6 at the Knoxville Volunteer Fire Department from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. h with vendors and food to sell.
Members heard from Robin Rayfield, director of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, about the independent audit of the state’s teacher retirement system. Gary Russell spoke about the changes in healthcare for 2022, and William Neville, an attorney for STRS, spoke on the STRS side of the audit ORTA had carried out.
The next meeting will be on November 9 at the Starkdale Presbyterian Church in Steubenville.
Mount Olive Baptist Church
organize the annual tea on Saturday
WEIRTON – The Mount Olive Women’s Ministry Baptist Church, located at the corner of Weir Avenue and Kessel Street in Weirton, will be celebrating its annual A, L, B & E Memorial Tea on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The guest speaker will be Carletta C. Platt Williams, who worked as a registered nurse at Weirton Medical Center for 35 years. Throughout her medical career, she has held several positions, including nurse practitioner in a cardiology and internal medicine practice and administrator of cardiopulmonary services at WMC. She is the owner and sole provider of Care Excellence NP Primary Care. Williams will discuss breast cancer awareness and COVID-19.
Additionally, the tea will feature Tunisha Howard, sole owner of Loyal Luxuries, LLC. Its merchandise, consisting of handbags, scarves and accessories, will be available for purchase after the program.
Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served. The event will take place indoors. Masks are mandatory.
Theme “Final Days of Weirton Steel” of the museum program
WEIRTON – Local author and historian Thomas W. Zielinsky will present the most recent research which includes the newly revised and updated edition of his 2010 book, “The Last Days of Weirton Steel”, during a conference Saturday at the Weirton Area Museum & Cultural Center, 3149 Main St., Weirton.
It starts at 11 a.m. A reception with light refreshments will follow. Free entry.
Zielinsky has expanded the narrative timeline of his book to include developments over the past decade, and has revised some of the information from the first edition as a result of additional research and the release of new material and information. Each book in the museum shop is signed by the author. Zielinsky expands on the history of Weirton Steel and explains the many variables that contributed to its collapse.
Zielinsky is also the author of the books “Rockyside: a forgotten mining community” and “Zalia, Hancock County, West Virginia: Rediscovering a Lost Community.” Both were co-authored with George B. Hines III.

The Weirton Area Museum & Cultural Center is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and Wednesday by appointment. Weirton United Way Turkey Trot scheduled for November 20
WEIRTON – The Weirton United Way Turkey Trot presented by TC Energy will be held on November 20 at Marland Heights Park. The run will feature a 5k run / walk for all ages, a fun 1 mile run for ages 13 and under, and a free run for toddlers.
The pre-registration fee is $ 25 for the 5K and $ 15 for the 1-Mile Kid’s Run. The family event will feature complimentary refreshments for attendees, the Hancock County School’s Story Book Cafe and a bouncy house provided by Weirton Rental.
