An epidemiologist deployed by the World Health Organization, Dr. Richard Valery Mouzoko Kibooung, was shot dead while working at Butembo University Hospital.
This prompted dozens of Congolese doctors and nurses to parade through the streets of Butembo, carrying banners marked "Ebola Exists" and showing their anger.
A spokeswoman for the Congolese Ministry of Health, Jessica Ilunga, said of the strike: "Our position is to respect their decision. We know that they risk their lives just to do their job.
"We will not force any of our employees to work if they do not feel safe."
