As officials seek ways to speed up the pace of COVID-19 vaccination in the United States, a Newsmax host suggested to viewers that vaccines are “unnatural” because they help fight diseases that are “supposed” to wipe out people.
Host Rob Schmitt during a segment on the Conservative Channel suggested, after admitting he was “not a doctor,” that vaccination “in a strange way usually goes unnatural,” as reported Media issues for America.
“If there’s a disease out there, maybe there’s just an ebb and flow in life where something is supposed to wipe out a number of people, and that’s kind of how l ‘evolution is unfolding,’ Schmitt said. “Vaccines kind of get in the way of that.”
The comments came moments after Schmitt insisted he was “not an anti-vaxxer,” and he went on to claim that he “can’t understand” why people at low risk of COVID-19 would be vaccinated, although health officials have stressed it as necessary to achieve herd immunity and prevent the spread of the virus.
Many right-wing commentators have also recently been pushing talking points against vaccination. And at the Conservative Political Action Conference, attendees recently encouraged the idea that Americans don’t get vaccinated, which Dr Anthony Fauci called “horrible” and “scary.”
