In early November, Newsom was spotted dining at the chic French Laundry in Napa for a longtime advisor’s birthday. Indoor dining was not open to the public in Napa. Newsom had a bitter backlash for the release, which he later called “a mistake.”

“I should have got up and … went home … The spirit of what I preach all the time was being contradicted,” he said. “I need to preach and practice, not just preach.”

Newsom said in his apology he wanted to “own” his mistake because he feared it would undermine the safety message he wanted to send to residents.

“I do my best every day to try to model better behavior,” he said.

The French Laundry outlet helped spark a recall effort that is gaining traction in California. The organizers of Newsom’s recall effort say they collected 1.825 million signatures. They need 1.5 million signatures by March 17, but are a fraction of the signatures to be rejected.
