Artist Tauranga Graham Hoete, aka Mr G, announced that he would remove his mural from the late Awanui Black, following accusations on social media.
In a statement published on his official artist page, Graham says his mural "
" I contacted the council team and I will immediately remove the mural that I painted Awa. "
The announcement follows a video that was broadcast by Awanui's wife, Ani. A number of allegations about her late husband.
"If I had known about prejudicial behavior [his] I would never have thought of painting a fresco to honor it," says Graham. and Ani support and his whanau. "
The mural of Awanui was painted during the Tauranga Street Art Festival 2017.
The piece was painted on top of a mural of the father of Graham, who was made in 2015 at the inauguration of the festival.
Graham said that at the time the image of his father was pretty faded and that it was not a big deal. he wanted to paint something fresh on top.
His mural depicts Awanui making an intense haka, with the Pukehinahina flag spread behind him.
Awanuiārangi Black died at the age of 48 on November 30, 2016.
