Special Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Angelina Jolie, returned to northern Iraq last month to meet with Syrian refugees currently living in Iraq
She met Ronia, a Kurdish widow whose children have special medical needs, and is one of many mothers struggling to take care of families.
"If I lived with nothing, I would eat only But this disease has cost us dearly," says Ronia.
Ronia raises five girls alone.Two of her daughters have thalassemia, a genetic disease of blood that stunts their growth and can be fatal
"My husband was suffering from thalassemia … He died because there was no treatment here," said Ronia almost six years ago.
She takes her two daughters Roshda and Leila to the hospital every two weeks for blood transfusions, but says they can not get all the medical care they need in Iraq. [19659004"I'mafraidoflosingthemfather"saidRonia
Angelina Jolie gave credit to the single mother.
"In a way, she managed to have a warm and loving home and her children smile at it all. The visit marked the 61st mission of Angelina Jolie – her fifth visit to Iraq – with the United Nations Refugee Agency since 2001.
