Acknowledged as a "beloved East End Festival" by The New Yorker, the Festival is known for presenting a wide range of music, performed by some of the country's best in the classic seaside setting. Long Island's longest running classical festival, it has maintained a sense of community, though it has gone from the small weekend of two concerts in 1984 to a five-week event that even the work commissions of talented musicians currently .
"Thirty-five years ago, I stood on my front steps and sold tickets for our very first festival," said Marya Martin, Founder and Artistic Director of BCMF. "It's hard to believe everything we've accomplished since the first weekend of two concerts, but before that, like so many musicians and composers, I came to America to follow my musical dreams."
This year's theme, "Destination America", showcases and highlights the music of composers who came to Canada for creative reasons, as immigrants, descendants of slaves, fleeing the country. oppression or exploring new opportunities.
"In celebrating our 35th season through the goal of" Destination America ", we highlight both familiar and new works, and reinforce the idea that America is a a place where creativity flourishes, bringing cultures together, "said BCMF Executive Director Michael Lawrence." Highlights of the Festival include a Bernstein Centennial Program featuring the Copland Appalachian Spring in the original version of the chamber for 13 instruments played by Nathan Gunn; an all-American special program at the Parrish Art Museum featuring the music of Higdon, Glass, Tsontakis, Dohnanyi, and Light Upon a Turning Leaf ; dance-inspired music by Strauss / Schoenberg, Dvořák, Piazzolla, William Grant Still and Mark O & Connor for the Festival's free annual concert; "The Mendelssohns: Fanny and Felix", a composer portrait hosted by Alan Alda; an evening of Bach sonatas; and highlights of the program, including Four Seasons of Vivaldi and Piazzolla, Stravinsky's Three Pieces for String Quartet, and Schumann's Piano Quintet.
A series of free pop-up concerts of the Rolston String Quartet will be the prelude to the Festival. The 30 to 40 minute causal concert will take place at various locations around the Hamptons.
Most of the Festival concerts will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Bridgehampton, but other special events, such as the BCMF Annual Benefit, will take place in other places of the Hamptons.
