ANCHOR (KTUU) – While officials from the Anchorage School District and teachers union representatives are negotiating a second full day, no agreement is reached, but some parents say they support increases in access for teachers.
Discussions between the Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Education Association continued on Friday. This occurred after a full day of mediation between the teachers' union and the school district on a three-year contract. From 2.30 pm, both sides were still working.
Two Seattle mediators spoke on Thursday and together to the teachers' union and the district.
Parents, some out of work Friday with their children during a day of service, say they are in favor of salary increases.
"I think they deserve an increase," said Leslie Frank, "I think they work very hard, I think they're highly educated and underpaid."
At Fire Island's rustic Bakeshop home, Jason Croft said he saw his mother-in-law, a former teacher, struggling financially.
"My general view is that teachers are extremely underpaid for the services they provide to our communities," Croft said. "If it were up to me, I would exchange legislators 'salaries with teachers' salaries, so teachers would have to earn six-figure income and legislators would earn $ 50,000 a year."
After the first hour-long meeting with mediators on Thursday, the chairman of the Anchorage Education Association said he was "optimistic".
This year, teachers returned to class without a contract. The stake is an implementation of teaching styles as well as salaries.
Both sides started at very different ends of the spectrum.
