Survivor NZ: A shipwrecked man falls on their sword – and this is not pretty

REVIEW: As someone who prides himself on punctuality, it seems that I arrived at the Survivor NZ party 13 episodes too late.

A real sucker for punishment, I spent the weekend nibbling a lot, and let me tell you that Matt Chisholm's ghost follows me everywhere.

Alas, we are here. The penultimate episode of season two, and what a turn we took.

It's boring, and it does not happen much- thing.

Tara, Lisa, Dave and Tess mix a few boards before putting together a puzzle. Dave wins, and chooses Tara as his plus for a luxury night in a five-star hotel. There are swans made from towels, an infinity pool at the front, and lemonade so chic that there is even a lime wedge in it. They are shaken.

Bringing Tara under the guise of "never having won a challenge", what Tara does not realize, is that it's not a party, it's a work trip. And not the kind of work trip where we have fun with your fun work balls, but the kind of work trip where you discuss strategy and spreadsheets and politics and so on.

With more high-level discussions on strategy than the Trump administration has succeeded in 2018, Dave is there with the sole mission of ensuring that he and Lisa always have Tara's their side, and that they can continue to gang up Tess flip-flopper alliance.

90 seconds later, paradise is more than a distant memory, and Matt summoned the castaways for the challenge of immunity, where this week we play hangman, baby !

Deeply aware that this is his only shot to make the top three, Tess is absolutely not there to wander.

Swaying like monkeys from a log, Lisa and Tara fall every 15 minutes

Dave is stung by a bug after an hour, but not even Matty will remove the sting, so he eats some concrete and hardens, before finally falling to 85 minutes mark.

Sinking into a pool of tears. Tess is on her way to the last three. The outsider of the last four did it.

"It was really epic," whispered Matt as the narrator of a children's action film.

While the three musketeers – Tara, Lisa and Dave – are panicked and there are so few people left to discuss the next Tribal Council, the comings and goings are set in motion. Someone is about to be stabbed in the back, but who?

Tess wants to vote Dave because she knows he's going to beat her, Tara prefers to vote Lisa, Lisa thinks she's in Tess's shooting line, and Tess does a horrible job to lie in Dave's face when he asks if she will vote for him.

Are you sitting? Because the shock horror plot runs in suspense.

Tess votes for Dave.

Lisa votes for Tara.

Dave votes for Tara.

Tara votes for Lisa.

After having a revelation earlier in the day, Tara decides that in her own mind, she has already won. With the grace and elegance of Hillary Clinton's concession speech, Tara chooses to fall on her sword, and bow out of the competition. Knowing that it was Lisa's dream to do the last three games, and that Dave had been playing an "honest game", Tara is going head up and obviously full heart.

But what will remain in history as most selfless act of Survivor NZ is soon spoiled by the discovery of what we viewers have always known, that Dave was secretly carried across the competition by his close friend Mat.

So what prompted Matt to finally find his conscience and turn the beans upside down? At what level of heat does Dave go to Tara? Will Dave and Matt be friends again?

The idea that Dave becomes the only survivor after such a bomb seems hopeless. Surely the liar could not bring all that money home? And even if he did, could he ever live with himself?

And just like that, for the first time in years, waiting for a week of reality TV is just impossible.
