Mary, Queen of Scotland explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Saorise Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies the pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to recover her legitimate throne. But Scotland and England fall under the domination of the irresistible Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). Every young queen sees her "sister" in fear and fascination (they were actually cousins). Rivals in power and lovers, and female regents in a male world, both must decide how to play the marriage game against independence. Determined to govern as much as a figurehead, Mary claims her claim to the throne of England, threatening the sovereignty of Elizabeth. Treason, rebellion and conspiracies within each court endanger both thrones – and alter the course of history.
