Last year, I was surprised by the EA Vancouver developer's decision to refocus the NHL franchise around World of Chel, a new suite of online modes, and I was delighted by the studio's success. In NHL 19, EA has partnered this online hub with key mechanical upgrades powered by a new physics engine. The company has adopted a similar tactic this time, developing World of Chel while tackling long-standing gambling and presentation issues.

I called NHL 19 the best-played hockey game in years, reflecting the significant progress made by EA Vancouver in two key areas: skating and collisions. Improvements in NHL 20 are less visible immediately, but I began to feel their impact as I spent more time with the game.

The new animation technology offers a pronounced upgrade of the washer sensors, a perpetual pain point. After years of fury on television as I watched the players fail to catch pucks nearby, I'm glad to say that it's a lot less of a problem. It's not just that players are now trying to reach the pucks nearby, but they can do it without slowing down. Ice hockey is a question of speed and fluidity, which makes it a significant improvement that the players of NHL 20 can receive passes in stride and make games in motion.

This is consistent with the game's new shooting animations. EA Vancouver has added player-specific throwing styles to NHL stars such as P.K. Subban and Alex Ovechkin, whom I appreciate as a superficial but welcome update.

But the studio's work on animation fusion for plans is a change that makes NHL 20 both seem more realistic and to feel more like real world hockey. Most of the delicate, sometimes even physical transitions between positions and actions have disappeared, leading to many missed opportunities. This year's update gives virtual players the appearance of being aware of the situation – allowing them to move and act more like real athletes on the ice – it also means I do not see as much games that should be impossible or remind me, It's a small problem.

I feel closer to the action thanks to NHL 20The reworked broadcast program. Although I like to hear Mike "Doc" Emrick and Eddie Olczyk call games for NBC Sports, their video game comments starting in NHL 15 never lived on television. The interactions between Cybulski and Ferraro are very numerous and the tone is livelier and more fun than the relatively normal calls of Doc and Eddie.

My preferred exchange occurs when I score an empty net goal (which unfortunately means that I have also heard it several times during my week or more with NHL 20). Ray notes that he scored 400 goals during his NHL career, but that he scored only two empty nets. James responds with disbelief. EA Vancouver also redid the visual side of the presentation with its own graphic overlays and new camera angles. The only element of the reworked presentation that does not work is the overlay of the scores in play. This is now a bar across the entire screen, occupying about 5% of the bottom instead of the smaller bar NBC style top left. The problem is not necessarily that it blocks the action too much. I just think it takes more effort to look down, away from the game, and because of the layout of the bar, it's harder to scan it quickly to find important information like how much time is left in the game. numerical advantage.

NHL 20Changes to World of Chel are more random. I'm happy that NHL Ones, the exciting head-to-head-to-head mode that debuted last year, is now playable offline in local multiplayer like Ones Now. Although his offer is limited, I can unlock other players and sites as and when I appreciate … because I will never see all the arenas of Ones play online.

Indeed, EA Vancouver has put the battle in fashion this year: it is now an 81 player tournament called NHL Ones Eliminator, which starts with 27 games to three and ends in four rounds ( 81, then 27, then nine, then the last three players in the running for the trophy). The mode uses a single elimination format – I have to start from scratch if I lose at any stage. This is not how men worked NHL 19, where I would be demoted only if I had lost two times in a row.

I still have a lot of fun playing at Ones, but in this setup it is particularly demoralizing to climb the ladder and then be sent home. So far, I have never exceeded the third. (EA Vancouver also converted NHL Threes, the arcade-style three-on-three mode, to this format for NHL 20'S World of Chel. That said, I spent most of my time playing World of Chel again. This is because my favorite mode, the Be a Pro Offline, has not changed since. NHL 19 (And it's not like EA Vancouver liked this much last year, notice). I understand the realities of creating these multiform games on an annual calendar: resources are limited and it is simply not possible for developers to revise every year. However, Be a Pro has been left out for ages, and it seems even more outdated in light of the experiences we've seen recently in solo career modes, such as Madden, FIFA and NBA 2K.

It seems clear that World of Chel represents the new future of EA's NHL franchise, which suits me perfectly. The hub really offers something for everyone – even those who are not interested in online competition – and its outdoor environment is a fun and refreshing departure from the rest of the game.

Most importantly, the considerable improvements in gameplay in NHL 19 and NHL 20 pay dividends in all modes, and will continue to do so for years to come. Five years after the appalling debut of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One hockey series, EA Vancouver's efforts have put the club back in a strong position, even if it's not quite the sporting game competitor. the year it was.
