This is the moment of desperation in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, as three teams try to avoid losing 3-1 on Wednesday. The Maple Leafs have hosted the Bruins 2 to 1, the Stars are trying to avoid tilting 3 to 1 against the home Predators and No. 1 team of the Conference. West in Calgary is trying to tie the game with Avalanche, which climbed 2-1 in the series on Monday.
From Toronto, the Bruins and Leafs have scored 10 goals in a game that has seen significant swinging of the clock. The Leafs dominated most of the game, but Boston was able to score goals non-stop and win with a 6-4 win. The Bruins first line rebounded after a poor performance in match 3 with two goals from David Pastrnak on Wednesday.
The Dallas Stars also entered the night in a precarious situation, but they also had to win with a big win. Dallas beat Nashville with four first-half goals (three on the power play) and chased Pekka Rinne out of the game. The Stars earned a 5-1 win to tie the series at 2-2.
For the last drink, the Avalanche made a thrilling return late in the game against the Flames, then won in overtime to take the lead to 3-1. The series was filled with incredibly fun and fast activities and the Avalanche top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog started to take over. We are now at a Colorado victory to have seen eight-on-one setbacks in both post-season conferences.
NHL Playoff Schedule April 17, 2019
- Game 4: FINAL – Bruins 6, Maple Leafs 4 (Series tied, 2-2) – [Box score]
- Game 4: FINAL – Stars 5, Predators 1 (Series tied, 2-2) – [Box score]
- Game 4: FINAL – Avalanche 3, Flames 2 OT (COL leads 3-1) – [Box score]
Colorado wins thriller in overtime
The Colorado Avalanche finished incredibly strong in Game 4 on Wednesday and managed to finish an impressive comeback against the Flames in overtime. Mikko Rantanen, who scored the tying goal at the end of the penalty period, also won the goal with a superb shot that beat Mike Smith. The first line of the Avs has been outstanding over the past two games.
This is a devastating defeat for the Flames, who not only won 2-0 in the third period, but who also nearly won in overtime with this opportunity. Unfortunately for Calgary, Philipp Grubauer made an incredible stop to keep his team alive.
Now the Flames will return to Calgary in a hole in the 3-1 series and will be forced to fight to continue playing in the playoffs. Another defeat and the No. 1 team from the West could soon join the No. 1 seed of the East (the Lightning) at an early exit in the first round. Unbelievable.
Avs ride back to force OT
Mike Smith held on as long as he could, but the Flames' defense did not bring him a lot of favors and the Colorado attack keeps coming. The Avalanche were able to erase a 2-0 lead in Calgary in the third period to force extra time for the second time in this series. Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen connected for the late third equalizer with this beautiful screen:
Colorado put 46 shots on goal in the regulation.
The Flames at Mike Smith's factory
The Calgary Flames currently hold a slight lead over the Avalanche after 40 minutes of play, but that could easily have been a draw as the third period drew near. Flames goaltender Mike Smith has another good performance between the pipes and one in two laps. He also made great stops, no better than this one.
The stars get a big victory
Dallas was in desperate need of a win Wednesday night and the boys never seized the day. Four opening goals allowed Dallas to win a 5-1 victory in the fourth game and decide the series. The series returns to Nashville, both tied at 2-2.
The Leafs make it interesting but the Bruins hold on
What happened in Toronto. Fleeing from three goals in the third period, the Leafs managed to return to the match and return to the same goal thanks to goals from Auston Matthews and Travis Dermott. The goal of Matthews, his second of the game, was scored on the power play and was set up by a brilliant pass from Mitch Marner.
The Leafs continued to dominate possession of the ball while the Bruins clung to life, but the B's were able to keep it and bury an empty goal to mark the win. The series is back in Boston, tied 2-2.
Stars illuminating predators
If you were expecting a low-scoring match Wednesday in Dallas, you were in front of a surprise when the first period of action scored four goals, all coming from the Stars. FOUR! Three of them qualified on the power play and the Stars have a huge advantage for the last 40 minutes as they seek to equalize in the series.
David Pastrnak, the Bruins power play goes from the front
Auston Matthews was able to equalize 2-2 early in the second period thanks to a very soft display of Tuukka Rask goalkeepers. But the Bruins responded by scoring two goals in a row, David Pastrnak, entered Wednesday in a series of three games without defeat. Pastrnak's second goal was scored on the power play, extending the Bruins' success on the men's advantage in this series.
Boston is still largely dominated and exceeded at 5 against 5, so we will see how the third period will unfold.
Bruins hit twice, but Leafs finish well
After a disappointing effort in Game 3, the Bruins once again bounced back with a quick start after a loss. Boston scored two goals in the first period of Wednesday's fourth game, and Charlie McAvoy largely accounted for both. The Bruins defenseman scored the power-play goal early, then quickly added some help with a great dish to Brad Marchand at the door.
However, the Leafs recovered to end the period in force. Zach Hyman allowed Zach Hyman to halve the gap by half before the break. The Bruins are lucky to still have the lead at this point.
