SANTA CLARA – Nick Mullens qualified Saturday for the 53-player 49ers after receiving bad news on the day of the final cups of the past two years.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan informed him that his team also won against C.J. Beathard to open the season as defending quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The 49ers kept the news silent until Monday, when Mullens told the media that he had won the replacement job.
The 49ers open the regular season on Sunday at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Mullens started the training team in the last two years, but he quickly gained notoriety last season after replacing Beathard in the starting lineup for the game of Week 9 against the Raiders.
Mullens, who signed with the 49ers in 2017 as an unprepared rookie from south Mississippi, has compiled a respectable 90.9 passer rating. He averaged 285 passing yards per game, finishing fourth in eight games behind Patrick Mahomes, Andrew Luck and Cam Newton.
Beathard was a third-round pick in 2017. In 10 starts in his first two seasons, Beathard made 13 interceptions with 12 assists. He was also fired 37 times.
Beathard and Mullens had similar statistics during the pre-season this summer while both were competing for the backup job.

Beathard completed 64.9 percent of his attempts for 280 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and a score of 94.4.
Mullens completed 64.7 percent of his attempts for 229 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and a score of 91.4.
