Ahead of its Sundance Film Festival premiere, the action / adventure feature film from Japanese director Sion Sono Ghostland prisoners was captured by RLJE Films of AMC Networks.

RLJE distributed Cage’s trippy sci-fi feature Color out of space, which they took over at TIFF 2019 and published last summer The tax collector by David Ayer.

Prisoners of Ghostland, written by Aaron Hendry and Rexa Sixo Safai, is located in the treacherous border town of Samurai Town where a ruthless bank robber (Cage) was released from prison by a wealthy warlord, the Governor (Bill Moseley), whose little- adopted daughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella) has gone missing. The governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for the recovery of the fugitive. Locked in a leather suit that will self-destruct within three days, the bandit sets out on a journey in search of the young woman and her own path to redemption.

Ghostland prisoners was fully funded by Michael Mendelsohn’s Union Patriot Capital Management. Patriot Pictures and XYZ Films were produced, with the latter achieving worldwide sales. XYZ handled the sales on Cage’s previous photos Color out of space and Mandy. Nick Cassavetes, Tak Sakaguchi (Tokyo tribe) and Yuzuka Nakaya (The forest of love) also star. Joseph Trapanese (Tron: Legacy, The Raid: Redemption, The Greatest Showman) composed the original score.

Ghostland prisoners was produced by Michael Mendelsohn for Patriot Pictures, Laura Rister for Untitled Entertainment, Ko Mori for Eleven Arts, Reza Sixo Safai for Boos Boos Bang Bang and Nate Bolotin for XYZ Films. It was produced by Natalie Perrotta, Nick Spicer, Aram Tertzakian and Yuji Sadai. Ward and Jess DeLeo of RLJE Films negotiated the deal with Bolotin of XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers.

“We are delighted to be working with Nicolas Cage again on a highly anticipated film directed by acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono,” said Mark Ward, Director of Acquisitions at RLJE Films. “Following the success of Mandy and Color out of space, Ghostland prisoners is already getting a big buzz and we can’t wait for audiences to see it at Sundance. “
