Ene, 37, is from Akpugo, in the local western government area of Nkanu, in the state of Enugu. he won the award with his research entitled "Anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy improves the radiation-induced abscopal response in glioblastoma".

Glioblastoma is an aggressive form of cancer that can occur in the brain or spinal cord and whose symptoms range from headaches to personality changes, nausea and incontinence.

Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that helps the immune system fight cancer, even though it has largely failed in the treatment of glioblastoma.

According to the newspaper, the molecular structure of the tumor present in this form of cancer eliminates only a few cancer cells during treatment.

New discoveries in Enne research seem promising for better treatment options, revealing that "radiation associated with anti-PD L1 treatment induces an immunologic response to unirradiated glioblastoma".

"The researchers are currently optimizing other combinations of treatments that could also be easily evaluated in the course of Phase I clinical trials on humans," the paper said.

Founded by E. Laurie Bittner in memory of her husband, Ronald L. Bittner AWard is published annually for the best review article on brain tumor research submitted by a resident physician or a junior faculty member in the United States.
