Neighboring school districts have implemented different guidelines on masks for the new school year, with Niles requiring them inside buildings and Howland making them optional.
Students in Niles town schools will be required to wear masks to start the school year, according to a press release from the district.
“The goal of our Niles City school district is to keep K-12 students in school, in person, five days a week,” its states.
In order to keep students in classrooms, the district relies on information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Ohio Department of Health, Governor Mike DeWine, and the Trumbull County Combined Health Department.
In addition, the district announced that it will continue with physical distancing, daily cleaning and disinfection, and contact tracing for any positive cases in the district. Additionally, anyone participating in indoor sporting events will need to wear masks and social distancing.
“Universal masking along with other mitigation measures gives our students the best chance of being in classrooms all day, every day, five days a week. We will continue to review all federal, state and local guidelines on a daily basis to determine when we can lift the mask requirement – we hope this is a temporary need, ” states of liberation.
Howland students, who return on September 7, will be required to wear masks when taking the bus, but they will be optional in class, according to Superintendent Kevin Spicher.
Spicher at Monday’s school board meeting said masks were optional inside schools. Students will attend classes in person five days a week. The desks will be spaced 3 to 6 feet apart and students and staff will have their temperature checked at the entrance to the building.
