Nintendo’s new Switch concierge service has a particularly useful feature that is expected to be included on all platforms and consoles in the future.
Nintendo recently announced its new Switch Concierge service, which will help new Switch owners get to know the console and, most importantly, the games to try. This is not just a step-by-step tutorial, but a virtual one-on-one meeting with a Nintendo representative. It’s a nice touch and a great way to really learn more about the console by being able to ask questions. Representatives can even recommend what to play next based on what you’re playing and what accessories you own. It’s a concept other companies should embrace for their gaming platforms.
Obviously, this is a big request. Even Nintendo doesn’t have unlimited resources to reach everyone, and there are waiting lists to participate. But it doesn’t have to be done the same everywhere. A simple helpline or chat specifically for using a platform like the PlayStation 5 would help customers set them up. However, this is not the most important feature; it would be personal recommendations.

Many players today have huge libraries to play, and while some have their arrears organized into rosters, others have a hard time choosing what they want to play next. Undecided, they’ll end up scrolling through their library rather than playing anything. Nintendo giving gamers personalized recommendations based on what they play, what they prefer, most owned / played genres, and even owned accessories is a must have feature for any gaming platform.
It wouldn’t be possible for all businesses to offer this level of personalized service, but even Steam has something like this in the form of AI. Every Steam user’s main library page has sections called shelves, and one of them is called Play Next. It’s a pretty new feature that just released last year from Steam Labs that creates a Recommended List from your library. It works the same as the Steam Store Discovery Queue, except that it learns what types of games you’ve played recently and how many hours each game has played. Of discovery, Play Next takes some tweaking and learning to be really useful, and often games with the lower play times win out, which can be a problem.
Other consoles need a feature like this, and an AI approach like Steam’s is just one solution – and there are ways to improve it. Adding an option to ignore certain recommendations based on a game that you didn’t like would help improve those recommendations. Being able to get suggestions for a genre you haven’t played recently might also help players look for something different.
A combination of AI and a quiz could also be implemented in the platforms. These questions might narrow down games based on their action level or length. Then, combining that information with an AI looking at previous play times, favorites, and more could result in personalized recommendations. Between Steam’s underrated Play Next and the Nintendo Switch concierge service, other companies may take note and create similar features for their audiences.
