A New Jersey hospital system has fired half a dozen of its employees for refusing to be vaccinated against the Chinese coronavirus.
RWJBarnabas Health, the largest healthcare system in Garden State, terminated the employment of six people described as “senior employees,” attributing it to “an ethical and professional responsibility to protect our patients and ensure an environment safe and COVID-19 free ”.
In May, the health system announced that it would require all team members at supervisory level and beyond to be vaccinated “until it is eventually required for all staff.”
Members of the supervision team had until June 30 to receive their injections.
“As healthcare workers and as team members committed to providing a culture of safety, we have an obligation to do everything possible to protect our patients and the communities we serve,” Barry H. Ostrowsky, president and CEO of RWJBarnabas Health, said in a statement at the time.
“As the health leader in the state, we must set a precedent to always provide the safest environment and protect New Jersey residents,” he added.
According to CBS News, a spokesperson confirmed that “the vast majority” of the management team have been vaccinated – 99.7%. The health system plans to announce its plans to make vaccinations mandatory for “all staff and doctors” in the coming days.
“RWJBarnabas employs over 35,000 people, including 9,000 physicians and 1,000 residents and trainees. It operates 15 hospitals and a host of medical centers across New Jersey, ”CBS News said.
In a Convention of States Action / Trafalgar Group survey released this week, a majority of Americans, 71.4%, expressed a belief that getting the vaccine should be a “personal choice” rather than a compulsory one.
