New Jersey health officials on Friday reported 5,023 more confirmed cases of coronavirus and 83 more deaths as vaccination doses approached 725,000 injections administered.
The seven-day average of new confirmed cases rose to 4,496, up 6% from a week ago and 14% from a month ago. Hospitalizations fell to 3,116, the lowest since November 30.
Governor Phil Murphy announced the latest figures at a coronavirus briefing in Trenton and the state administers about 25,000 doses per day on average.
“We are working every day to maximize every dose we receive and to administer to as many people as our supply allows,” said Murphy. “As the federal government increases our staffing, we will be able to open up to more appointments. And, as we will now know what our allocation will look like three weeks later, we will be able to make longer-term decisions to improve our immunization schedule.
New Jersey has now lost 21,383 residents during the nearly 11-month epidemic with 19,254 deaths confirmed and 2,129 considered probable. The death toll for January rose to 2,274 confirmed deaths, the highest number in a month since May.
Murphy said the most recent positivity rate for tests done on Monday, the most recent day available, was 8.37% of the 65,709 tests done.
The transmission rate remained at 0.91 for the third consecutive day. Any number less than 1 indicates that the epidemic is slowing down.
The total number of confirmed cases is now 615,202 out of more than 9.2 million positive tests. There were also 72,067 positive antigen tests, which the state recently began making public. These cases are considered probable, and health officials have warned that positive antigen tests could overlap with confirmed PCR tests as they are sometimes given in tandem.
Murphy announced that he was extending the ban on interstate sports to certain age groups, including high school programs, which was set to expire on Sunday. The ban was first announced in November.

VACCINATIONS
So far, 724,371 doses of the vaccine have been administered in New Jersey, according to the state’s Scoreboard. Of that number, 610,110 was the first of two doses people will receive.
That’s over 1.23 million doses the state has received from the federal government, according to a running tally from the federal Centers for Disease Control.
The state’s six immunization mega-sites have now opened with about 200 other sites across the state, although some mega-sites had to suspend operations for a day after running out of doses.
Murphy said Wednesday the state can now expect about 130,000 doses from the federal government over the next three weeks, up from 100,000, but demand still far exceeds state supply.
“We still have a big imbalance between supply and demand. We’re still going to go through this for the next few weeks, ”Murphy said in an interview with CNN.

HOSPITALIZATIONS
As of Wednesday evening, 3,116 patients were hospitalized with confirmed (2,884) or suspected (232) cases of COVID-19 in 71 hospitals in New Jersey. It’s five less than the day before.
This included 563 in critical or intensive care (15 fewer than the night before), including 378 in ventilators (28 fewer).
According to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard, 363 COVID-19 patients were also discharged on Thursday.
Murphy said any hospitalization of more than 5,000 patients would likely trigger new rounds of restrictions. But the number of people hospitalized has mostly declined slowly in recent days after reaching a more than seven-month high of 3,873 people on December 22.
The state peaked at more than 8,000 hospitalizations in April.
SCHOOL CASE
At least 629 students and staff from 131 New Jersey school districts have contracted COVID-19 during outbreaks at school, according to the latest update from state health officials.
This is an increase of 10 districts from the previous weekly report. There are now confirmed school-based outbreaks in all 21 counties, although the state does not identify individual school districts.
These figures do not include students or staff suspected of having been infected outside of school or cases that cannot be confirmed as epidemics at school. Although the numbers continue to rise every week, Murphy said school epidemic statistics remained lower than state officials expected when schools reopened for in-person classes.
New Jersey defines school epidemics as cases where contact tracers determined that two or more students or school staff had caught or transmitted COVID-19 in class or during school activities at school.
BREAKDOWN BY AGE
Broken down by age, 30-49 year olds represent the highest percentage of New Jersey residents who have contracted the virus (31.2%), followed by 50-64 year olds (23.7%), 18-29 (19 , 3%), 65 -79 (11.1%), 5-17 (7.5%), 80 years and over (5.4%) and 0-4 (1.6%).
On average, the virus has been deadlier for older residents, particularly those with pre-existing conditions. Almost half of the deaths from COVID-19 in the state were among residents aged 80 and over (47%), followed by those aged 65 to 79 (33%), aged 50 to 64 (15 , 6%), 30 to 49 years (4%), 18 to 29 years. (0.4%), 5-17 (0%) and 0-4 (0%).
At least 7,713 deaths attributable to COVID-19 in the state have occurred among residents and staff of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. That number has grown at a faster rate again in recent months, with deaths in nursing homes across the state nearly tripling in December.
There are currently active outbreaks in 435 facilities, resulting in 7,338 active cases among residents and 7,929 among staff.
WORLDWIDE FIGURES
As of Friday, there had been more than 101.5 million positive COVID-19 tests across the world, according to an ongoing count from Johns Hopkins University. More than 2.19 million people have died from complications from the coronavirus.
The United States has reported the most cases, at more than 25.7 million, and the most deaths, at more than 433,200.
