NJ Weather: Snow, winter mix likely from winter storm next week. Last on timing, the track.

While northwest New Jersey could receive a quick flurry of snow later on Friday, forecasters are watching closely for a winter storm that is expected to bring widespread snow, ice and a winter mix Monday through Tuesday.

Expect snow mostly north of I-195 and a winter mix in the southern half of the state, the National Weather Service said in its discussion of the forecast Friday morning.

Projected snow totals will not be available until Saturday afternoon, although the weather service has warned snow enthusiasts, “this does not appear to be a system that will produce hit quantities.”

Forecasters say the biggest worry will be slippery conditions, especially in places where a winter mix falls.

Questions also remain about the path and timing of the storm, with the main window of precipitation expected to fall between noon Monday and noon Tuesday.

As the weekend approaches, forecasters say areas north of the Interstate 78 corridor could see snow showers / flurries or light rain from Friday to tonight.

It is also possible for showers or light showers to reach the Interstate 95 corridor. In general, expect sunny skies with highs in the 40’s on Friday with winds blowing up to 30 mph , which makes the feeling a bit cooler.

It will be a cool, dry weekend with highs only between 30 and 30 seconds Saturday and Sunday and high winds that will make it appear colder. Nightly lows range from teenagers to 20-year lows. On Saturday, wind chill values ​​will range from 10 to 20 degrees in the northern half of New Jersey, according to AccuWeather.com.

Despite a few flurries and brief flurries of snow on Wednesday, most of New Jersey had very little snow throughout January – which is typically the second snowiest month of the year.

The Newark area measured only half an inch of snow this month, and only a trace of snow was reported in Atlantic City.

During a normal January, the Newark area has 5 inches of snow in the third week of January and 7.9 inches for the entire month. Atlantic City typically has 2.5 inches of snow in the third week of January and 4.5 inches throughout the month.
