No Man’s Sky gets a free update to ‘Frontiers’, a ‘sci-fi fantasy’

Famous Hello Games Developer No Man’s Sky’s fifth anniversary this week by not only looking back at the history of the game, but giving us a glimpse of what’s to come.

No Man’s Sky launched on August 7, 2016, in particularly tragic condition. Corn extensions over the years turned the shaky start of indie play into a comeback story for the in-game history books. Free updates weren’t just small tweaks with a bit of new content sprinkled in. Hello Games has transformed No Man’s Sky completely, by adding now essential gameplay elements, redesign of its visuals, and allow cross play.

The last update, No Man’s Sky: Borders, now add … something. We don’t know exactly what as a reveal trailer yet. and the blog post did not offer much detail, but we do know it will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation VR. The extension is “to come”. Hello Games founder Sean Murray said: “The next stop on this journey is not far away.” So I hope he doesn’t take too many liberties with the definition of “soon”.

The life of No Man’s Sky has really been a journey, both for Hello Games and for the gamers. Murray noted that the team had an average size of six members throughout development and had 15 members at launch. Its comeback and success story were hotly contested and required constant quality improvements, which even the harshest early reviewers would likely agree that Hello Games did.

“It hasn’t always been easy, but what has always been our guiding star is the players and the community,” Murray wrote in the fifth anniversary blog.

Normally I think about listening to players and the community on PR talking points, but it’s unlikely that No Man’s Sky would be where it is today without doing it. Sony also posted a look back at No Man’s Sky over the past five years, detailing how the game has evolved from expansion to expansion.
