Swiss hospitals could be invaded by an increasing number of severe cases within weeks, the federal government has warned.
The government is considering ordering staff and visitors to present a Covid-19 certificate – providing proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative test result – in most indoor public spaces,
The requirement would cover events, as well as restaurants, bars and leisure venues like cinemas and museums, as well as sports centers and cultural activities, the government said.
“If hospital admissions continue to increase as sharply as they have recently, hospital overload cannot be ruled out within a few weeks,” the federal government said in a statement.
“The government has therefore decided as a precaution to consult the cantons and the social partners on reinforced measures against the spread of the coronavirus,” he said.
Switzerland is affected by a fourth wave of coronavirus with a “very worrying” increase in infections, the head of the government’s crisis unit said on Tuesday.
The number of new infections in Switzerland and Liechtenstein rose by 3,212 on Wednesday, bringing the total above 765,000 since the start of the pandemic.
The death toll is approaching 10,500.
