CLEVELAND, Ohio – Residents of Cuyahoga County should not celebrate Thanksgiving with anyone outside of their immediate homes, board of health director Terry Allan recommended on Friday.
County residents should limit Thanksgiving gatherings to only spouses, or children or other relatives who share a home, and they should also avoid all Thanksgiving-related travel, County Director Armond Budish said at the same news briefing.
“There will be time for us to celebrate when it’s over and it will be a big party, but now is not the time,” said Allan.
Rather than traditional Thanksgiving gatherings, Allan recommended alternative ways to celebrate the holidays: use video calling to connect. Wait another time to celebrate. Drop food off at the doors of relatives, neighbors, or friends, but don’t congregate inside.
The recommendations come at a time when Cuyahoga County, most other counties in Ohio and much of the country are experiencing record peaks in COVID-19 cases.
Cuyahoga County has struck a total of 27,591 coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic on Friday, state data showed. This represents an increase of 4,185 new cases since last Friday.
