The film industry was go through stuff lately, but as we worried about how the company will survive this never-ending pandemic, a seemingly undeniable achievement has started to take shape around director Chloe Zhao. Nomadland. Over the summer, the film won the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the prestigious (although its name is less exciting) Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, effectively guaranteeing it a nomination for Best Picture at the Oscars – if a historic precedent is anything to go by, since every TIFF winner for a decade has secured one. Again this is the first time already that the same film won both TIFF and Venice, so the historical precedent is a bit more difficult to follow. (Nomadland was also one of The AV clubfavorite movies of 2020, just throw that in there.)

Now, NomadlandThe meteoric rise of continues: As reported by Variety, the film also won the National Society of Film Critics’ Best Picture Award, with Zhao also getting Best Director, star Frances McDormand Best Actress, and cinematographer Joshua James Richards Best Cinematography. The National Society of Film Critics doesn’t always line up as cleanly with the Oscars as some other organizations, but it accurately foreshadows Oscar wins for Parasite, Moonlight, and Projector, which rhyme and won the award for best film from both organizations. Nomadland doesn’t rhyme with those, but we’ll have to wait until the Oscars later this year to see if that matters.

Plus, as people will point out with gusto or dejection for the rest of the year (depending on what they think of a three-letter acronym that has come to define the American film industry): Zhao after Nomadland is from marvel Eternals, an adaptation of a bizarre book by Jack Kirby it could be the next big thing in the MCU. It stands to reason, then, that many people will be keeping an eye on Nomadlandthe answer to awards season.
