Fourteen people were shot dead early Saturday morning, police said, in what appeared to be a targeted attack on the eastern edge of Aiken.
Craig Youmans, a 30-year-old man from north Augusta, was killed in the dam, according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables. Youmans was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene.
Several other people were taken to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. First responders, including assistants from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Aiken Public Security Department, treated the injured as they arrived.
Violence erupted around 12:50 a.m. outside Seventh Lounge, a nightclub along Richland Avenue East, the sheriff’s office reported. Masks, broken bottles, cigarettes and tattered police tape could be seen strewn across the parking lot later that day.
The shooting took place outside the Seventh Lounge on Richland Avenue East, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said.
Witnesses saw people shoot “at least one rifle and one handgun,” according to Sheriff’s Office captain Eric Abdullah. Investigators believe the shooters set off in a light-colored Chevy Tahoe.
It is not clear whether there was a confrontation or a shootout in the parking lot of the Seventh Lounge. An inquest, assisted by the Aiken County Coroner’s Office, is underway.
In a Saturday afternoon statement, the nightclub offered condolences and described what happened overnight as “really” sad.
In 2018, a man was shot in the leg at the Seventh Lounge, according to previous articles from Aiken Standard.
