A North Carolina teacher resigned over outrage over alleged comments she made to black students that they would be her “field slaves” if it had not been for the Constitution.
A parent told NBC affiliate WITN of Washington, North Carolina, the remarks by the Winterville Charter Academy professor.
“She made them raise their hands during a constitutional lesson and reminded them that if it hadn’t been for the Constitution, they would be her slaves. His slaves in the fields, ”Kanisha Tillman told the news channel.
Tillman has a child in the classroom.
The school, located northeast of Wilmington, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday. The school principal sent a note to parents in the eighth grade class and said action was taken following a “race insensitive lesson,” according to WITN.
The memo also stated that two “race-insensitive words” were said to have been used by several children in the class “without proper redirection or inappropriate response from the educator.”
The principal said the school accepted the teacher’s resignation.
“Culturally relevant training for the teacher who has resigned will be provided, as well as proactive training measures for our current and future staff members,” the principal said in the memo.
The school, with 661 students, opened in 2015. Its website says 61% of students are black or African American.
National Heritage Academies, a charter school management company that oversees the academy, said the school immediately took into account the teacher’s remarks as well as the students’ remarks. The company told WITN it is also investigating ongoing complaints from parents that “racial-insensitive student remarks continue.”
“While the privacy rights of students and staff prevent me from sharing specific details, what I can share is that we will not tolerate racism in our school community and will continue to take swift action. to resolve these issues, “the management company said in a statement to the news station.
