Fourteen of the 128 patients hospitalized as of Tuesday, August 31, were in intensive care. Three of those hospitalized are under 15, according to the health ministry.
The number of active COVID-19 cases reached 2,254 known positives on Tuesday – the highest since December.

Cass County, which includes Fargo, has the state’s best-known active cases with 435. Burleigh County had 429 known cases on Tuesday and Ward County, which includes Minot, had 197.
The state’s 14-day rolling average positivity rate was 6.57% as of Monday, August 30.
Since June 27, there have been 170 cases of reinfection.
Hospitalizations, death
North Dakota had 23 staffed intensive care beds available statewide on Tuesday, as well as 193 inpatient beds. On Tuesday, there was a staffed intensive care bed available among the two hospitals in Bismarck. Thirteen staffed intensive care beds were available at the three Fargo hospitals.
The health ministry began publishing data on the breakthrough cases last week. A landmark case occurs when a person tests positive for COVID-19 after being fully immunized. During the week of August 22, the state reported 12 hospitalizations where the person was fully vaccinated and 77 hospitalizations where the person was not fully vaccinated.

Even though a person can become infected with COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated, health officials point out that those who are vaccinated often have milder symptoms are less likely to be hospitalized.
Nearly 320,000 North Dakotas have been fully vaccinated and 0.0373% have been hospitalized due to COVID-19, according to the Department of Health.
The risk of becoming infected with COVID-19 also decreases when a person is vaccinated.
In North Dakota, one in 180 fully vaccinated people has tested positive for COVID-19, compared to one in 16 unvaccinated people, according to the Department of Health.
