BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Bexar County firefighters are working to put out a large apartment fire on the north side.

The fire started at around 1 p.m. Thursday at an apartment complex in the 4000 block of TPC Parkway.

Residents say they received an alert to turn off their water heater, and moments later a fire broke out on the second floor of an apartment building in the complex, officials said.

Bexar County fire officials said 50 residents were evacuated from the building.

The blaze then spread to other units in the building, slowly destroying it as fire crews struggled to put it out.

Firefighters said they were bringing water to the scene and fighting the flames because the resort’s fire hydrant had not been distributing water since it was frozen. Six tankers have already emptied and further assistance is awaited.

Several teams of firefighters from different agencies assist on the scene.

A SAWS map shows a water failure in the area. Residents at the resort said they had no water, and SAWS said water would need to be restored east of US 281 near Evans and Bulverde Roads on Friday.
