Illinois hospitals have not achieved as many patient safety results this season.
The state lost a place, from 13th to 14th place, at number 14, according to the Leapfrog Group's published hospital security level in the spring of 2019. Leapfrog is a non-profit surveillance organization that evaluates safety. patients in acute care hospitals, excluding children's hospitals, throughout the country twice a year.
The Northwestern Memorial Hospital has gone from an A grade to a B grade after being upgraded last year, while the Rush University Medical Center earned a B grade for the second season.
Forty-two hospitals in Illinois scored highest on patient safety; 30 obtained a B; 33 got a C; and five got a D.
The fall in Illinois is due to the lower number of Grade A hospitals compared to previous seasons, said Erica Mobley, Director of Operations at Exceed.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital upgraded its alphabetical note last spring to A grade, but returned to grade B this time.
"We appreciate Leapfrog's ongoing efforts to improve the usefulness and accessibility of information for consumers," said Megan McCann, spokeswoman for the hospital, in a statement. email. "We look forward to continuing the dialogue between the healthcare systems and Leapfrog to evolve these resources to give consumers the most accurate reflection possible about the quality, safety and experience of the patient."
Among those who achieved a grade of B was the Rush University Medical Center, which fell in the fall after winning everything, as it did since the start of the 2012 scoring.
"Quality is an ongoing process and we strive to be a national leader in the delivery of high quality care," said Charles L. Jolie, spokesperson for Rush University Medical Center, in a statement. email. "We do this by measuring and setting goals for many aspects of our care processes and our clinical outcomes."
The grade B of Rush University Medical Center is partly due to errors in the data of requests for reimbursement of hospitalization expenses, said in a statement Dr. Omar Lateef, CEO of the Medical Center of the University Rush, as well as the chief doctor of the hospital and the health system. He added, "We have made changes to protect ourselves from these data errors and we expect our next Leapfrog rating to recognize the extremely high level of patient safety at the Rush University Medical Center."
While writing errors occur, hospitals have "many opportunities" to review the data before publication, Leapfrog President and CEO Leah Binder said in November.
Mount Sinai Hospital has been upgraded. He got a D grade instead of an F, which allowed Illinois hospitals to not have F this year.
