Divers joined Sunday nine people from a flooded house in Sicily. Two others lost their lives when the car they were in was filled with water.
Avisa Leggo reports that two families of twelve lived in the Casteldaccia house near Palermo on Saturday. Two of them had gone shopping and a third outside the house when the water level in the Milia River reached a record speed.
This happened after a week of extreme weather in the Italian region.
Elva has not posed a threat yet, but the house has been flooded. The resident who lived outside survived by climbing a tree and calling emergency services on the mobile. On Twitter, the fire services describe the next rescue mission as very dramatic. Nine lifeless people from two families – children, parents and grandparents – were released from the flooded home during the night.
"A cruel tragedy struck us," said the mayor of Casteldaccia, Giovanni Di Giacinto, according to the Ansa news agency.
The flow of water into the river in the city has increased rapidly due to heavy rains, according to local media.
Two other people were found dead in a car Sunday in the province of Agrigento in Sicily. The car was flooded with floodwater, a police officer told the DPA.
Ansa reports that a man is found dead near Vicari in Sicily. In Corleone, a missing doctor was sought.
Thirty people lost their lives in last week's storm, with rains, tornadoes, floods, landslides and strong winds in several parts of the country. There is always a warning about extreme weather in the coming days.
