Polling stations are now closed in New Caledonia after voters have decided whether the archipelago will still be part of France or whether it will be independent.
The attendance rate was 73.68% an hour before the closing of the premises Sunday night, according to the Pacific authorities based in Nouméa.
This is a 15% higher than the 2014 provincial election in the archipelago.
New Caledonia has about 270,000 inhabitants.
According to polls preceding Sunday's referendum, there is a strong majority against independence.
The referendum is the result of a long and partially bloody struggle for independence conducted for nearly 30 years.
The result should be finished later Sunday evening.
