In total, two women and three men were found dead after the collapse without notice of two- and five-story buildings on Monday morning. According to the authorities of the French port city, three people are still missing.

The collapse occurred in the neighborhood of Noailles, a district a little tired and poor with many dilapidated buildings.

Local residents tell the AFP news agency that they have been warning the authorities for a long time that most of the buildings are undeveloped, but nothing has happened.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said earlier that nearly 6,000 buildings out of a total of 44,000 homes are considered endangered. He calls the situation too unacceptable.

On Monday evening, a third neighboring building fell in part. This one and one of those who fell together earlier in the day were doomed and uninhabitable. The perpetrators and the missing lived in a building that had not yet been sentenced.

The Marseille authorities launched a comprehensive plan to modernize the city center in 2011. Four years later, a report revealed that approximately 100,000 inhabitants of Marseille were still living in homes that are dangerous for health and safety.
