Edmund Zagorski (63) was pronounced dead at 19:26 local time. In 1984, he was sentenced to death for two men for drug trafficking. Authorities in the US state of Tennessee had decided to impose an electric chair on November 1, the first implementation of this method in Tennessee since 2007 and the United States since 2013.
In October, Zagorski asked to die in an electric chair to bring down the poison. His lawyers fought in court to avoid being executed with a syringe. They argued that the mixtures of poisons used are painful and constitute a form of torture.
The application was initially rejected, but a federal judge agreed to stay enforcement so that the authorities could prepare for the use of an electric wheelchair. They then asked for the postponement of execution, but it was rejected by the Supreme Court on Thursday night and it was executed soon after.
Zagorski is the second who has been performing with an electric chair in Tennessee since 1960.
