Italy says that France and Malta have agreed to accept some of the migrants on a boat with about 450 people refusing to dock in Italian ports.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Saturday night in Malta and France said yes to accept 50 migrants each from the ship, which is a fishing boat.

Where the other 350 people on board can take the road is not clear. Conte however says that "other countries will follow quickly" and accept the migrants

The Maltese and French authorities have not even confirmed that they should receive anyone.

It was the Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said on Saturday morning that the ship would not be allowed to dock in Italy.

The ship was heading to the Italian island of Lampedusa, but Salvini refused. The authorities of Malta have also said no. They claim that the ship is closer to Italy than the Maltese territory and that the migrants on board want to land in Italy.

– As promised, that does not interest us. Maltese authorities, smugglers and well-intentioned organizations must only find that this boat will not land in Italy Salvini said.

He thus adheres to the policy of the new government to maintain closed ports ships with refugees and migrants. This has already led to verbal conflicts with the authorities of Malta and other EU countries.

Last month, the French rescue ship Aquarius had to travel to Spain to accept the migrants on board. A few days later, Malta had to receive the German ship Lifeline with 234 people. This happened after several European countries agreed to take on the responsibility of the migrants on board.
