Despite increasingly improved relations with China, Norwegians are still the only Schengen citizens who can not travel without a visa to Shanghai and Beijing.
"The case has been reviewed on several occasions by the Chinese authorities," said Frode Overland Andersen, communications manager at UD at NTB.
Residents from all EU countries, as well as from Switzerland and Iceland, can travel without a visa to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou for up to 72 hours. The schemes were introduced on the diplomatic ice front between Norway and China between 2010 and 2016, and this is after all the reason Norway was not included.
"Like Norway, China itself chooses its visa and entry rules," Overland Andersen points out.
Last week, King Parish, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Industry concluded their state visit to China. The visit was described by the UD as a success and as a real boost in the newly established friendship relationship between the countries. We can therefore hope for a softening.

The Hainan holiday destination, known for its beaches, is by the way the couple of the king who started his trip to China by a private stay earlier this month. According to the Chinese authorities, Norwegians must participate in a group trip organized by an approved organizer to travel without a visa for a maximum period of 15 days.
