GRAN CANARIA
Between January and April of this year, 13 Norwegians and Swedes were infected with an antibiotic-resistant bacterium in a hospital south of Gran Canaria.
The "Superbacteria" Klebsiella OXA-48, reports the EFE news agency.
Norwegian health authorities reported nine cases, seven of which were detected Klebsiella OXA-48. According to Wikipedia, bacteria can cause serious diseases such as pneumonia, especially in the elderly and in people with a reduced immune system. Bacteria are also a common cause of so-called hospital infections (nosocomial infections).
In Sweden, six cases of infection were reported when affected people were hospitalized in Gran Canaria.
