Spain again said yes to refugees and immigrants who were rejected by the new Italian government. The Proactive Open Arms organization recently rescued 60 people from drowning in the sea outside of Libya. The nearest marina was in Malta and Italy, but the two countries refused to add the rescue vessel. After a clear signal from Spain, the boat could go to Barcelona. This is the second time in a short time that Spain is receiving rescue boats rejected by Italy.
The rescue of 60 people aboard Proactiva Open Arms comes after a boat of 120 refugees recently shot and sunk off Libya. The organization accuses the Italian authorities of not notifying that the boat was at sea. A total of 100 people have died, including women and children.
Earlier in June, Valencia received 650 people rescued aboard Aquarius and two other ships off the coast of Libya. Most came from different countries of Africa, but also from Afghanistan and Pakistan. In addition, the new right-wing government in Italy refused to help.
The 60 people recently rescued aboard the Open Arms are from Southern Sudan, Mali, Syria, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Eritrea, Egypt, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Libya, Guinea and Bangladesh. Passengers must have been rescued from a crowded zodiac.
