The temple is dedicated to the rain god known as Tlaloc in Aztec mythology, and was found inside the pyramid of Teopanzolco in Cuernavaca in the state of Morelos. The summit of the pyramid was the hardest hit by the grave. Two temples have already been found – one dedicated to the Mesoamerican god of sun and war Huitzilopochtli, and another also to Tlaloc.
– The ground of both temples collapsed and folded, exposing them to the risk of collision, says Koneicza.
INAH then conducted further studies of the structure of the pyramid with a lower radar, they found traces of the newly discovered Tlaloc Temple.
The structure was built around 1150. According to experts, the temple was probably 6 meters long and 4 meters wide. Remnants of ceramic and an incense burner probably belonging to the Tlahuica culture have also been found.
The earthquake that made possible the discovery of the temple occurred in the afternoon of September 19 of last year. The earthquake was measured at 7.1 and more than 369 people died, mainly in the capital city Mexico City.
The tomb was the deadliest since the tragedy of 19 September 1985 when 10,000 people were killed, 30,000 wounded and 100,000 homeless after a giant earthquake.
