There are more and more demands for sanctions against Saudi Arabia, but Trump is critical

Saudi authorities now recognize that the regime's critic and journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The assassination of Khashoggi has attracted a lot of international criticism. However, President Donald Trump in the United States has been reluctant. He treated Saudi Arabia with silk gloves, critics say.

Arms exports, Iran and a peace plan between Israel and Palestine are at the origin of Trump's choice to keep his gloves.

Conditions of sanctions

In recent days, American politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, have imposed sanctions.

"This could have consequences," said Thom Tillis, Republican Senator from North Carolina at the New York Times.

The cancellation of an agreement on the sale of weapons is one of the proposals. But also to demand the departure of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman when he is found guilty. Even after the disappearance, the powerful Crown Prince was directly linked to the murder.

Handles after straw

President Donald Trump said last Thursday that if it were confirmed that Saudi Arabia was late, the penalty would be severe. Currently, after the scheme itself has confirmed, Trump has been cautious.

Trump compared Saudi Arabia's conviction last week with charges against US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and said no hasty conclusion was to be drawn.

Trump also launched a theory that the "self-murdering killers" stood behind, reaffirming the crown prince's claims that someone lower in the system was responsible.

On Saturday, Trump criticized Saudi Arabia's explanation and accused the authorities of lying about Khashoggi's death, writes the Washington Post.

In the interview, however, he stressed that the country was a very important ally.

Millionaire deal at stake

There are many reasons why Trump will continue to have good relationships.

A deal on weapons worth $ 110 billion is far from being canceled for Trump. The agreement will provide "millions of jobs," according to Trump.

On Sunday, Germany has chosen to temporarily suspend its arms exports to Saudi Arabia, one of the biggest consumers of arms in this country. Trump quickly announced that he had no plans to follow. He does not see such a stoppage of sales as appropriate.

"It does not help us stop an order, it hurts us more than it destroys them," said Trump.

Bolwerk against Iran

Trump marked Saudi Arabia's strategic importance to himself and the United States when he chose to make his first trip abroad as president of the country.

He called it a "historic gathering in Saudi Arabia with leaders of the entire Muslim world", where the goal was a cooperation to fight extremism, terrorism and violence.

Saudi Arabia is considered an important ally in the fight against violent Islamism. The country also plays an important role in preventing Iranian domination in the Middle East. Defense Studies Department Principal Investigator Svein Melby believes the United States has trusted Saudi Arabia.

"Trump seeks to use harsher instruments to bring change to Iran and to obtain it, he needs the support of Saudi Arabia," said Melby.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said Sunday in an interview with Fox News that he was confident that relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States will "survive this situation"

Peace between Israel and Palestine

Saudi Arabia is also an important part of Trump's peace plan for the Middle East, led by Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law.

Kushner should have had close relations with the Crown Prince. He was among others on a secret visit last year. But before the assassination of Khashoggi, the peace plan was in trouble.
