NASA eliminates all asteroid alarmism by ensuring that the Earth is not immediately threatened by the rocks of space, while revealing that two of them will pass on our planet safely in the next days.
The asteroid 2010 C01, measuring approximately 120 to 260 meters (400 to 850 feet), will fly by 13 September, followed by QW7 2000, between 290 and 650 meters in the early hours of 14 September.
"These two asteroids pass at about 14 lunar distances from the Earth, about 3.5 million kilometers, but small asteroids pass close to Earth at this distance,"said NASA planetary defense officer Lindley Johnson.
"These asteroids have been well observed – once since 2000 and the other since 2010 – and their orbits are very well known."
The two rocks are classified as Near Earth Objects (NEO), although, when it is distances in space, the word "near" becomes a highly relative term, considering the millions of kilometers of space between us and them, even at their closest point. .
2000 QW7 was classified as "Exceptionally brilliant" when it was discovered for the first time, two decades ago, and will be a little closer when it comes back in 2038, but still poses no threat.
These asteroids are probably remaining debris from the formation of the solar system some 4.6 billion years ago. While rock asteroids typically form between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, their cousins of icy comets form in the cold external solar system.
