Novant Health suspends hundreds of employees for failing to receive Covid-19 vaccine

Novant Health says employees must now have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine or requested – and received – a medical or religious exemption.

Those who had not – around 375 workers in 15 hospitals and hundreds of clinics and outpatient facilities – are now suspended.

Anyone who does not comply with the vaccination policy during the five-day unpaid suspension period will lose their job, the Winston Salem-based company said.

About 98.6% of the company’s more than 35,000 workers complain about the policy, he said.

Workers who have started a two-dose vaccine series will now have until Oct. 15 to get their second dose and stay in compliance, the company said.

Employees who receive exemptions are required to undergo weekly Covid-19 testing and wear N95 respirators, masks or other appropriate protective equipment and eye protection when working on Novant Health premises, a indicated the company.

President Joe Biden, while announcing general vaccine rules for federal workers and large employers earlier this month, also said he would demand that the 17 million healthcare workers from facilities receiving funding Medicare and Medicaid are fully immunized, including in hospitals, home care facilities, and dialysis centers.
Besides Novant Health, other health systems and hospitals have also suspended or cut the jobs of people who did not comply with immunization policies.
