Nurse in Germany suspected of replacing Covid vaccines with saline solution | Coronavirus

Authorities in northern Germany have called on thousands to get vaccinated against Covid after a police investigation revealed that a Red Cross nurse may have injected them with saline.

The nurse is suspected of having injected a salt solution into people’s arms instead of real doses at a vaccination center in Friesland – a rural district near the North Sea coast – in early spring.

“I am totally shocked by this episode,” Sven Ambrosy, a local councilor, said on Facebook as local authorities appealed Tuesday to around 8,600 residents who may have been affected.

Although the saline solution is harmless, most of the people who got vaccinated in Germany in March and April when the suspected change took place are elderly and at high risk of catching Covid.

Police investigator Peter Beer, speaking earlier at a press conference covered by German media, said based on witness statements there was “a reasonable suspicion of danger”.

The motive of the nurse, who has not been named, was not clear, but she had expressed skeptical views about the vaccines in social media posts, police investigators said.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspect had been arrested or charged in the case, which broadcaster NDR said was assigned to a special unit that investigates politically motivated crimes.

Local police declined to comment outside of normal working hours.
