Philadelphia cream – A nursing assistant was shot and killed inside Jefferson Hospital in Center City early Monday morning, CBS Philly reports. Police say the suspect, a 55-year-old heavily armed man wearing gowns, shot the 43-year-old medic on the 9th floor of the hospital just after midnight.
Police said the suspect also worked at the hospital as a nursing assistant, but it was unclear how the two knew each other.
The suspect was able to get inside the hospital despite his weapon because he had access to certain areas since he was an employee, police said. He wore a bulletproof vest and had several weapons, including an AR-15, police said.
The suspect fled the hospital in a U-Haul truck and was seen heading towards I-95, brandishing a large pistol.
Shortly after, the suspect entered a shootout with police in a wooded area near the School of the Future, a public high school in the city.
At least two police officers were shot and wounded – one in the right arm and the other suffering from a scratched nose, police said. Both were in stable condition.
The suspect was shot in the upper body and neck and was in critical condition, police said.

“When the officers got there, four of our officers from the 16th District met the man,” Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. “The man who was the gunman fired at the officers, and four of them fired back. We learned that he was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying several weapons in addition to the long gun, which would be an AR-15. He also carried some sort of handgun, a semi-automatic handgun. ”
All three were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
