The revelations accusing the Russian president, who is not directly named but linked through associates, are “unfounded”, according to the Kremlin.
Russia has dismissed the revelations leaked in the Pandora Papers as “unsubstantiated claims” after an investigation by a media consortium brought to light the wealth allegedly amassed by individuals linked to the Kremlin.
The Pandora Papers The investigation, involving some 600 media reporters including The Washington Post, the BBC and The Guardian, is based on a leak of 11.9 million documents from 14 financial services companies around the world.
The files were leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and published on Sunday.
Putin is not directly named, but he is linked via associates with secret assets in Monaco, including a waterfront house acquired by a Russian woman who allegedly had a child with the Russian leader.
But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday called the leaks “just a set of largely unfounded claims.”
“We haven’t seen anything about the wealth hidden within Putin’s inner circle,” Peskov said, adding that it was not clear “how to trust this information”.
Leaks reveal that the $ 4 million Monaco property was purchased through an offshore company in late 2003 for the woman – from Putin’s hometown of St. Petersburg – who is believed to have previously had a relationship with Putin.
“If there are any serious publications, based on something concrete and referring to something specific, then we will read them with interest,” Peskov said.
Russian investigative newspaper Proekt reported in November last year that the woman, Svetlana Krivonogikh, had at one point worked as a housekeeper and was the mother of Putin’s child.
The purchase of the property took place shortly after Krivonogikh gave birth, according to the leaks.
The media consortium said Krivonogikh did not respond to requests for comment.
Last year, Proekt described Krivonogikh as an elusive millionaire who lives in Russia’s former imperial capital and receives expensive gifts from individuals linked to the Kremlin.
He said facial recognition analysis of photographs obtained by their reporters showed Krivonogikh’s daughter looked a lot like Putin.
The investigative outlet was declared earlier this year an “undesirable organization” by authorities as part of a wider crackdown on dissenting voices, banning its work in Russia under threat of jail time.
The Pandora leaks also revealed that the head of a state television network, Konstantin Ernst – who oversaw the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics – received a stake in a contract. billion dollar real estate in Moscow.
