According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more counties in New York state are experiencing “high” transmission of Covid-19.
The CDC strongly recommends wearing masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status, in areas with “substantial” (orange areas on the map above) and “high” (red) transmission of Covid-19 – now 60 of New York’s 62 counties. Areas with at least 50 new cases per 100,000 people (or a positivity rate of 8-9.9%) in the past 7 days are considered ‘substantial’ spread, and areas with at least 100 cases for 100,000 people (or at least 10% positivity rate) in the past 7 days are considered “high” deviations.
Chautauqua, Columbia, Erie, Genesee, Herkimer, Livingston and Steuben counties went from “substantial” to “high” transmission last week, while Schuyler County went from “moderate” to “high”. A total of 46 counties are currently experiencing “high” transmission. A week ago it was 40 counties; a month ago it was zero.
Onondaga County has been in the red zone for two weeks now and currently has an average of over 100 new cases per day (736 in the past 7 days), a 32% increase from a week ago . Onondaga County is also seeing a 5.83% positivity rate and a 36.59% increase in hospitalizations, according to the CDC.
Attendance at the New York State Fair got off to a slow start, suggesting concerns over Covid remain high in central New York City.
Meanwhile, Lewis, Orleans, Schoharie and Tioga counties were downgraded to “substantial” spread after previously seeing “high” transmission. Masks are recommended indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
The CDC currently does not recommend indoor masks for people vaccinated in only two counties in New York City: Allegany County and Clinton County. Both see “moderate” spread of the coronavirus.

The CDC previously said fully vaccinated people could stop wearing masks in most situations in May, but the new recommendation is largely due to the more transmissible Delta variant, which now accounts for the vast majority of Covid cases. in New York State and nationwide. Most new infections in the United States continue to involve unvaccinated people.
Some retailers have changed their mask policies in recent weeks, such as requiring face covers for store employees and / or recommending them to customers.
The CDC also recommends indoor face coverings for teachers, staff, students, and visitors to all schools across the country, regardless of immunization status. Children under 12 still cannot be vaccinated and a large number of children under 18 are not vaccinated.
The CDC’s recommendation for unvaccinated people remains the same nationwide: Continue to wear a mask until you get the vaccine. And masks are still recommended for all people in crowded indoor environments, such as buses, planes, hospitals, prisons, and homeless shelters.
