Former President Obama’s grandmother died in Kenya over the weekend, the family confirmed.
Sarah Obama, who married President Obama’s grandfather and helped raise his father, died at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, the AP reported.
She was at least 99 years old.
In a statement, Marsat Onyango said the former first family had been notified and sent their condolences. A family spokesperson said Sarah Obama was ill, but had not died of coronavirus.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta called Sarah Obama’s death “a blow to our nation”.
“We have lost a strong and virtuous woman, a matriarch who united the Obama family and who was an icon of family values,” Kenyatta said, according to the AP.
Sarah Obama has worked for years to improve the education of children in this poor country.
The family said she would be buried this week.
